Biography

The voice through which Emanuel Pessanha and his companions, coming from diverse cultures, passionately invite you on a unique musical journey is anchored in elements of Portuguese music, blues, jazz and world music... and in its total transfiguration ... Fado.

Emanuel Pessanha - Tintin for friends - was born in Ponta Delgada on the island of San Miguel (Açores). In high school Emanuel played in several local bands where he sang in English. In '74 he formed the group "Construção" with Luís Alberto Bettencourt. Listening to forbidden protest songs of Josè Afonso, Emanuel developed a taste for singing in his native language portuguese. "Construção" participated in the "Festival da Riveira" on Isla Terceira in the first three editions of the Festival Maré in august '85, '86 en '87, and in the RTP Açores TV-series "The boat and the dream" by Joseph Medeiros.

Emanuel went to the Netherlands in '88 where in '92 he formed the group "Estica as pernas" which later became "Quatro Ventos" with the addition of guitarist Wout Pennings, former teammate of Frank Boeijen and many other great names in Dutch music. Wout learns to play the Portuguese guitar, Emanuel falls in love with fado and records a solo-album titled "Restrato", together with the Dutch piano player Rood and with a guest-appearance of Raimundo Seixas on gitaar and a duet with singer Teresa Tapadas.

Invited by Rui Veloso the group records their first album "Flor do Mar" in '96 in Lissabon, with guest appearances by Rui Veloso and Fernando Lameirinhas. To date, "Quatro Ventos" has recorded five albums including the last CD "Vozes do Silençio" (Voices of silence) with guest-appearances of a.o. Iain Matthews (Fairport Convention and Southern Comfort).

Quatro Ventos performed on all major stages in the Netherlands and played in Germany, Zürich, Paris and Lisbon on the Antena 1 "Viva da Música" festival and on "Portugal no Coração" on portuguese national television RTP. In 2007 the group plays on "Boston Portugese Festival."

On 21 september 2007 "Quatro Ventos" plays for the first time on the Açores in Theater Micaelense in Ponta Delgada. The performance is joined by Henk Wanders, Luís Alberto Bettencourt and Joseph Medeiros.
